Claude Monet has been keeping the 2nd graders busy! The students learned a lot about Monet by reading a book about his life. They learned that Monet started making art at a very young age and eventually started the art movement known as Impressionism. Next we talked about primary colors, secondary colors, the color wheel, and how to mix colors. Finally the kids started creating their masterpieces by taping off where the bridge would be. Once they had their bridge taped, they could start painting. As the kids learned, Monet had a very unique painting style and they tried to recreate his unique style by dot painting with their fingers. They worked only with the primary colors so any secondary colors they used were mixed by them. They kept referring to Monet's "Water Lily Pond" for inspiration. With this inspiration a lot of students added lily pads and flowers in the water. Once the paint was dry, they could peal off the tape and color their bridge with color pencil. The kids captured Claude Monet's style perfectly and these paintings turned out beautifully.
These giraffes are so colorful and to say the least, adorable! 2nd grade learned many things throughout this project. They learned about using simple shapes to draw objects, overlapping, color schemes (primary, secondary, warm, cool, complimentary), and printmaking! The we talked about using simple shapes like triangles, circles, and ovals to draw the giraffes with pencil. Once they had at least 5 giraffes with 2 overlapping, they traced with sharpie. Then they were onto coloring with marker. Using 2 colors, they picked a color scheme for each giraffe. We took one day off of coloring and the kids experimented with printmaking. They printed their leaves. They learned about the tools of printmaking, rolling ink onto their leaves, and printing them. It was back to coloring to finish their giraffes with marker then onto the background using yellow and green crayon. Last step was to cut out their printed leaves and glue them onto their paper. I was so proud of how these turned out and so were they. They've given the hallways a colorful, happy addition. 2nd graders keep showing off their amazing artistic talents!
2nd grade students explored drawing a self portrait, overlapping objects, and a new medium, watercolor pencils. The students could choose between a lollipop, watermelon, pumpkin, or apple to overlap their face. They first drew their object, then drew themselves by looking in a mirror and drawing what they see. We discussed what lines needed to be erased to show that the object is in front of their face. They then added a background of their choice. All pencil lines were traced with sharpie and then the coloring could begin. Any skin areas were colored with skin tone crayons. Next was coloring the rest of the picture with watercolor pencils. Once everything was filled with watercolor pencil, the students learned to add little bits of water to turn the watercolor pencil into paint. When the students had gone over everything with water their overlapping self portraits were complete. I thought they captured themselves extremely well in their self portraits!
2nd grade started off the year with some colorful designs! The students learned about their warm and cool colors and how materials work together. They learned that watercolor resists crayon because of the wax in the crayons. They all had some creative designs and great painting skills!
